Background: One of college football’s most dangerous and exciting offensive players, Evans damaged ligaments in his left knee (he had surgery on May 22) while making a catch in 2002 spring game and his playing status remains uncertain for the 2002 season ... a preseason second-team All-American and the No. 4 receiver in the nation according to The Sporting News ... always a deep threat, he consistently wins battles for the ball and can gain yards after catches ... excellent speed and hands ... depending on his health, he would be considered a legitimate Heisman Trophy, Biletnikoff Award and All-America candidate ... already Wisconsin’s career receiving yards leader (2,255 yards) after just three seasons ... enters 2002 season needing 1,056 yards to become Big Ten’s all-time leader in receiving yardage ... needs 21 receptions and 10 touchdown catches to become school’s career leader in those categories.
High School: Top-50 player in the midwest by Prep Football Report, PrepStar and Super Prep at Bedford ... first-team all-state his senior year ... team MVP and captain ... career total of 38 catches for 984 yards (25.6 ypc) and 12 touchdowns ... averaged 28.7 yards on 20 receptions as a senior, including eight TDs (40 percent of his catches) ... intercepted four passes and blocked three kicks as a senior ... averaged 17.7 yards per rush his junior season ... biggest sports thrill was making 81-yard TD catch in homecoming game as a junior ... second at state track meet in 300-meter hurdles ... 3.3 GPA ... three-time academic all-conference ... same high school as former Badger wide receiver Chris Chambers ... coach was Jim Hodakievic.
