Mason Now Officially a Badger

Madison East junior multi-sport star Marquis Mason was in shock that Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema would offer him a football scholarship. Days later, Mason is still in shock and at a loss for words, but he managed to get enough words out to make himself a solid commitment to the Wisconsin Badger football team.

MADISON – The only surprise about Marquis Mason committing to the Badgers is that he didn’t do it six days ago.

In a report by WKOWTV.com in, Mason announced that he is now solid verbal commitment to UW, a school that is five minutes away from his house and a school that will provide him an opportunity to play both football and basketball at the next level.

“Definitely UW,” said the Madison East star in the interview. “I wanted to stay in state, whether it was basketball or football. I get homesick very easily and Madison is five minutes away from my house.”

Mason has been playing football for only one season, but Mason’s size and his ability show his potential at the wide receiver position.

"Right now, they see something that I don’t see right now,” Mason said. “They see tons of potential and hopefully, I can get a little bigger. I’ll be bigger than all the other cornerbacks, which will be a plus for the Badgers.”

In an interview with Scout.com Wednesday evening, there was little question that Mason was going to become Wisconsin's second verbal commit for it's 2010 class, joining D.C. Everest's Konrad Zagzebski, who officially.

“I’m committing soon,” Mason said. “If I do this now, if I do commit to Wisconsin, it would be a weight lifted off my shoulders. I can focus on my senior year. It will probably a couple weeks. I’m sure I’ll make a decision soon.”

That decision officially came Wednesday night.

“I don't have that pressure on me now,” Mason said “It's just a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.”

Mason will be a scholarship athlete on the football team, but Bielema will allow Mason (6-foor-5, 215 pounds, 4.54 40-yard dash) to walk-on with the basketball program for 2010. Mason is still waiting to get in touch with assistant Howard Moore.

“I know from a couple people that I'm not going to have an outside life at all," said Mason. “It's going to literally sports and books. I might have three weeks the entire year to relax.”
