Curt Phillips, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound, quarterback, from Kingsport (Tenn.) Sullivan is verbally committed to Wisconsin. Phillips was one of three prospects on their official visit this past weekend in Madison and he was gracious enough to speak with Badger Nation about several subjects including his official visit.
“I had a great (official) visit,”
Curt Phillips
said. “My hosts were
Scott Tolzien
and
Mickey Turner
. I had a really good time. I got the chance to see the campus and meet a lot of people. Everything was great.
“The game on Saturday was great. We really enjoyed it. I came with parents and my brother. The atmosphere in the stadium was incredible and we all loved the “Jump Around.”
“
Wisconsin
was voted one of the top places for football atmosphere and we could see why. The fans are great and we just had the best time. I also had the chance to sit down with Coach Bielema and Coach Chryst for a little bit before the game.”
Phillips isn’t afraid to say that he grew up a fan of
Tennessee
football but it was his quarterback style that led him to Madison.
“I did grow up a fan of UT football and I went to a few games here and there the past few years,” Phillips said. “I’m not die-hard UT and there quarterbacks are more pro-style. My style is more dual-threat and I knew a high school coach in Tennessee who knew Coach Bielema and that’s how the ball got rolling for Wisconsin.
“Coach (Paul) Chryst showed up at my spring practice and it was a little bit after that when I received my official offer from Wisconsin. My dad was excited but my mom was a little concerned about the distance.
“My dad and I visited Madison during the summer and shortly after that I gave Coach Bielema my verbal commitment. After my official visit this past weekend, my mom is sold now.
“I was a little concerned because (John) Stocco is more of a pro-style quarterback but TD (
Tyler Donovan
) is a dual-threat like myself and he’s doing great. I’m looking forward to the future.”
Phillips got to bond with several of his soon to be teammates.
“I did get a chance to meet
Peter Konz
and
Tyler Westphal
. I also spoke with
Dex Jones
and I was on my official visit with
Marcus Cromartie
and Shelton Johnson. We got along great. Marcus and Shelton were great guys and I told them both that I wanted them here at Wisconsin.”
Phillips was an all-state selection as a junior. He’s also an outstanding student carrying a 3.6 GPA in the classroom and scored 27 on his ACT. Phillips chose Wisconsin over
Duke
,
Stanford
,
South Carolina
,
Boston College
and
Rutgers
. Over the summer, Curt visited all the schools that offered him a scholarship before eventually settling on Wisconsin.
