Single-game Buffalo tickets on sale July 17; Shaughnessy on Hendricks list; Women’s track: Four Badgers earn All-Academic honors; Doherty CoSIDA third vice president; Schuman places seventh at WPGA championship; Men’s rowing: Four Badgers to compete on U-23 team; Jentz, Tiedt take on new roles

Football: Buffalo tickets on sale July 17

The University of Wisconsin athletic ticket office announced last week that it sold 69,300 public and student season tickets for the 2006 season, a 99 percent season ticket renewal rate. But single-game tickets for UW’s 12th game against Buffalo Nov. 18 will go on sale July 17 at 8:30 a.m. UW’s six other home games are sold out. Tickets for the Buffalo game can be purchased online at UWBadgers.com, by calling 1-800-GO-BADGERS (or 262-1440 locally) or at the ticket office in Kellner Hall. A lottery system will be in effect for in-person sales.

Football: Shaughnessy makes Hendricks watch list

Sophomore defensive end Matt Shaughnessy was named to the 2006 Ted Hendricks Award preseason watch list; the award goes to the best defensive end in the nation. Shaughnessy played in 11 games, of which he started seven, and had 39 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two pass breakups and five quarterback hurries. He is the No. 17 defensive end in the nation according to The Sporting News. He was a first-team Freshman All-American last season, according to TSN, ESPN.com and Scout.com, an honorable mention All-Big Ten pick and UW’s Rookie of the Year.

Women’s track: Four Badgers earn All-Academic honors

Juniors Michelle Bellford, Amanda Ganser, Katrina Rundhaug and Erica Schoeller all earned academic honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recently. Athletes who qualified had a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher and met the NCAA Division I regional or national qualifying mark in their respective event. Bellford qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional with a personal-best mark of 41 feet, 9 ¼ inches in the triple jump, Ganser qualified for regionals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10 minutes, 37.14 seconds at the Big Ten outdoor championships, Rundhaug competed at the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, respectively, and Schoeller qualified for NCAA regionals, finishing 13th in the 800 meters in 2:10.59.

“The Incredibles” to play at Camp Randall

The Wisconsin athletic department will show “The Incredibles” Aug. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Camp Randall Stadium as part of its free family night. Family night begins at 5:30 p.m. and includes music by the Cash Box Kings, a visit from Bucky Badger, face painting, inflatable games and more. The movie will be shown on the videoboards. Fans are encouraged to bring a blanket and picnic basket. Food and blankets can be brought into the stadium but not grills, alcohol, glass containers, gum, pets or chairs. Free parking is available in UW lots 16-19 and fans can enter the stadium at gates 1 and 4.

Doherty CoSIDA third vice president

UW Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Justin Doherty has been named the third vice-president of the College Sports Information Directors of America after serving on the board for the past three years. Doherty will be the future president of the 2,100-member organization. Doherty has managed UW’s athletic communications office since 2001 and was named the assistant athletic director for communications this May.

Doherty oversees athletic communications for 23 sports and handles day-to-day operations for the football team but has also worked in media relations for the men’s basketball team at various tournament events, as well as at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. He was the 2006 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four media coordinator. He has authored “Tales From the Wisconsin Badgers,” a series of short stories about Badger football.

Schuman places seventh at WPGA championship

UW men’s golf coach Jim Schuman placed seventh at the Wisconsin Professional Golf Association Professional Championship, held this year at the Timber Ridge Golf Club in Minocqua, Wis. Schuman shot a 214 (70-69-75). He won the championship last season with a three-under 213, one of his three state titles.

Men’s rowing: Four Badgers to compete on U-23 team

Juniors Andy Kaufman, Max Vice-Reshel, Chase Phillips and Scott Wallen have all been named to the 2006 U.S. Under-23 National Team, according to USRowing. The four will compete at the 2006 FISA World Rowing Under-23 Championships July 20-23 in Hazewinkel, Belgium. Phillips and Vice-Reshel will compete in the men’s four with coxswain, Kaufman will race with the men’s eight and Wallen will row with the men’s lightweight four boat.

Jentz, Tiedt take on new roles

Assistant Athletic Director for Business Operations John Jentz has been promoted to associate athletic director, while Doug Tiedt will become the assistant athletic director for academic services, Athletics Director Barry Alvarez recently announced. Former Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services David Harris recently departed for Iowa State, spurring the changes.
