Bairu, Bauer named UW’s athletes of the year

The University of Wisconsin has named senior Simon Bairu and junior Sara Bauer its Athletes of the Year, the school announced yesterday.

Bairu was selected Badger men’s athlete of the year for the second consecutive year. In the fall he led the UW men’s cross country team to its first team NCAA Championship since 1988 and he won the individual NCAA title for the second consecutive year. Bairu also won the Big Ten Cross Country Championship and the Canadian Men’s Cross Country Championship for the third straight year. He also received All-American honors in outdoor track and field for his third-place finish in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Bauer, the Badger female athlete of the year, led the UW women’s hockey team to its first NCAA Championship and won the Patty Kazmaier Award as the nation’s top player. She was the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s Player of the Year and the WCHA tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Through three seasons at UW, Bauer ranks third on the school’s all-time scoring list with 145 points. She led all Badgers this past season in assists (36) and points (58) and registered 17 multi-point games. When Bauer scored a goal, Wisconsin was 17-0-1 and the Badgers were 27-1-1 when she had at least one point.

Off the ice, Bauer was recently named the ESPN The Magazine At-Large Academic All-American of the Year in the University Division as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She is one of 12 finalists for the University Division Academic All-America of the Year, which includes athletes from all sports.

Likens arrested

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jeff Likens, a defenseman on UW’s men’s hockey team, was arrested last weekend at a music festival near Cadott, Wis., and charged with underage drinking and disorderly conduct. His initial court appearance is set for Aug. 1.

UW’s student-athlete discipline policy, which mandates automatic suspensions subject to appeal, does not pertain to alcohol-related offenses.

Likens had 15 assists and one goal last season for the NCAA Champion Badgers.

Alvarez could become a Fox Sports analyst

The Associated Press reported yesterday that Barry Alvarez, UW’s former head football coach and current athletic director, has tried out to be a game analyst with Fox Sports for its coverage of the Bowl Championship Series this season.

Alvarez spent the past 16 seasons at the Badgers’ helm, before handing over head coaching duties to Bret Bielema after the 2005 season.

Beard selected for prestigious position with CABMA

Doug Beard, senior associate athletic director at the University of Wisconsin, has been elected third vice-president of the Collegiate Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA).

Beard was named to the post at the recently concluded CABMA meetings in New Orleans. Beard will become the organization’s president in 2009.

CABMA, composed of more than 500 members from college athletic departments in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, is devoted to the establishment, maintenance and implementation of the highest standards of integrity and efficiency in the scope, policies and procedures involved in the management and administration of intercollegiate athletics.

Beard is the third administrator from Wisconsin (William Aspinwall, 1957, Jamie Pollard, 2004) to serve on CABMA’s executive committee.
