Women’s hockey: Bauer wins Patty Kazmaier award

Wisconsin junior forward Sara Bauer became the school’s first recipient of the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, which goes to the most outstanding NCAA women’s hockey player. Bauer received the award at a banquet in Minneapolis Saturday night.

Bauer, who has 57 points on 22 goals and 35 assists, fourth best in the country, led her team to its first-ever NCAA Championship. The Badgers will take on Western Collegiate Hockey Association foe Minnesota Sunday afternoon at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.

Bauer, an assistant captain, previously was named the WCHA player of the year, the WCHA tournament most valuable player, the U.S. College Hockey Online player of the year and first-team All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association.

Off the ice, the St. Catharines, Ontario, native is majoring in biology with a grade-point average of 3.96. She also works with the Ronald McDonald House and helps children participate in wheelchair hockey. Her parents are Kim and Barb Bauer.

An athlete is selected for the award based on outstanding individual and team skills, sportsmanship, performance in the clutch, personal character, competitiveness and a love of hockey. Academic achievement and civic involvement are also considered.

St. Lawrence sophomore forward Sabrina Harbec and Minnesota-Duluth junior goaltender Riitta Schaublin were the other two finalists.

The award, named for the late Patty Kazmaier, a three-time Ivy League champion with Princeton University, is supported in part by a grant from the National Hockey League Foundation.

In addition to Bauer, junior defender Bobbi-Jo Slusar was named to the AHCA first-team. Slusar, a Patty Kazmaier top 10 finalist, is tied for second on the team with 39 points on 12 goals and 27 assists.

Badger head coach Mark Johnson was named one of six finalists for the AHCA Division I coach of the year after guiding the team to its first-ever national title appearance and WCHA regular-season and tournament championships. That award will be presented April 29 at a banquet in Naples, Fla.

Men’s tennis: Badgers drop to No. 30 Michigan

Sophomore Nolan Polley won his 10th singles match this season but the rest of the Wisconsin men’s tennis team did not fare so well, falling 6-1 to No. 30 Michigan Saturday afternoon in Madison.

Polley defeated Wolverine Brian Hung 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles spot, the lone win for Wisconsin (8-6 overall, 1-2 Big Ten).

UW’s No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Felipe Bellido and junior Lachezar Kasarov won their doubles match 8-6 but Michigan (9-6, 3-0) claimed the doubles point with wins at the top two spots.

Women’s tennis: Wolverines cruise by Badgers

No. 27 Michigan handed the unranked Wisconsin women’s tennis team (3-11, 0-2) a 7-0 loss Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich. Michigan (8-4, 2-0) swept both the doubles point and the singles points. This is the Badgers’ seventh straight loss, a streak that started Feb. 18 against then-No. 8 Northwestern.

Playing at No. 6 singles, sophomore Morgan Tuttle came the closest to winning, falling to Allie Shafner 6-3, 6-4. Junior Kaylan Caiati, playing at the top singles spot, fell to No. 97 Kara Delicata 6-2, 6-3.
