Calhoun Badgers’ MVP

Junior star tailback Brian Calhoun was rewarded for his record-setting season, as he was named Wisconsin’s Jimmy Demetral Most Valuable Player at the team’s annual banquet in Middleton Friday.

Calhoun has 1,423 rushing and 563 receiving yards, becoming the first Badger to rack up 1,000 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in the same season. He tied the school record with 21 rushing touchdowns, set a school record with 23 total touchdowns and was considered a candidate for the Heisman Trophy earlier in the season.

Tailback Dion Foster and defensive end Terrance Jamison were named scout team offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively. Freshman defensive end Matt Shaughnessy was named the rookie of the year after leading all freshmen with 39 tackles. Senior Brandon Williams earned the special teams award after he had 375 punt return yards and two touchdowns on 24 punt returns, and 616 kick return yards on 22 returns, including an 85-yarder.

Other award winners include: senior tight end Jason Pociask, Ivan B. Williamson Scholastic Award; junior strong safety Joe Stellmacher, Tom Wiesner Award for a Wisconsin-born student-athlete; junior left end Joe Monty, Jay Seiler Coaches’ Appreciation Award; senior receiver Jonathan Orr and senior guard Jason Palermo, Wayne Souza Coaches’ Appreciation Award; and Wayne Esser, executive director of the Mendota Gridiron Club, The Captain’s Cup.

Softball: Wisconsin inks two

Pitcher Letty Olivarez and catcher Shannon Krein will join the University of Wisconsin softball team beginning with the 2006-07 season, first-year head coach Chandelle Schulte announced.

Olivarez, who is from Newark, Calif., was on the All-Mission Viejo Athletic League Team and All-East Bay team in 2005. She was named her athletic league’s pitcher of the year in 2004. She attended Newark Memorial High School and competed with the San Jose Sting. She plans to pursue a pre-medicine degree at Wisconsin.

Krein plays softball, basketball and golf at Escalon (Calif.) High School. She was named to the Trans Valley All-League First Team three straight years and earned a spot on the 2004 all-district team. She batted .467 as a junior and competed with the USA Elite team. She wants to major in pre-law-related field. Krein’s father, Joel, lettered in football at Wisconsin in 1979 and graduated from UW.

“Letty and Shannon will be tremendous additions to our team,” Schulte said in announcing her first recruiting class. “Signing a pitcher and a catcher puts us on solid footing for the recruiting future. I am very pleased to welcome them to the UW family.”

Men’s tennis: Badgers sign two

Michael Dierberger and Christoph Gruendemann have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Wisconsin men’s tennis team, beginning in the fall of 2006.

Dierberger, who comes from Shorewood, is a two-time state champion from Nicolet High School. He is ranked in the top 40 junior players in the country and recently won the boys 18 singles division at the 2005 National Open in St. Louis and was a semifinalist at the Interscholastics East Championship in Lexington, Ky.

Gruendemann comes from Germany and lives in Marbella, Spain, where he is competing in ITA Futures events until he comes to Wisconsin.

“We’re really excited about the signing of these recruits,” men’s tennis coach Greg Van Emburgh said. “They will help elevate the program to a new level. They are great players and everything a coach looks for in a new student-athlete. They will have an immediate impact on our team and I can’t wait to start working with them.”

Men’s basketball: ESPNU to show two Badger games

ESPNU will show Wisconsin men’s basketball games against the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Dec. 7 and Marquette Dec. 10. Craig Cashun and former Badger Mike Kelley will be the announcers for the games.
