MADISON – Marcus Randle El, a freshman football player at the University of Wisconsin, was suspended indefinitely Monday after he was arrested and tentatively charged with battery following an alleged incident at a campus dorm.
Randle El, 18, was arrested and released Monday afternoon after someone posted $500 bail, according to an official at the Dane County Jail. An initial court appearance has been scheduled for March 14.
A UW Police official confirmed that Randle El was arrested Monday but would not release further details regarding the case. WISC TV in Madison reported Monday evening that UW Police were still conducting their investigation.
Under the terms of UW’s Student-Athlete Discipline Policy, any athlete that has been convicted of, or has been charged with, a violation of local, state or federal law related to drugs, gambling or violence, or has committed any felony, is automatically suspended indefinitely from competition and practices.
Randle El must decide whether he wants to appeal the suspension. If he decides not to appeal, he will remain suspended until any charges have been addressed by the legal system and/or until the completion of any university or departmental disciplinary processes.
Randle El played in seven games last season as a reserve receiver and situational quarterback, catching two passes for seven yards and running 11 times for 29 yards.
The Badgers begin spring practices Friday.
Jones arraigned
Lesha Jones, a freshman on the Wisconsin women’s basketball team, was arraigned Monday on a felony burglary charge, according to court records. Jones, 19, entered a not guilty plea. A trial date has not been set.
