Minnesota versus Wisconsin:

The most-played college football rivals in NCAA D-I history meet in Madison Saturday for their 114th meeting. Minnesota leads the series 59-46-8, which dates back to 1890 and has been played every year since 1907. The last time the teams met, Minnesota won 37-34, thanks to Rhys Lloyd's 35-yard field goal. Wisconsin has claimed the Paul Bunyan's Axe seven of the last nine times and the Gophers have lost five consecutive games at Wisconsin. There is more on the line than just the battle axe and bragging rights for a year—the schools now compete for the Border Battle Cup, which pits 11 Wisconsin and Minnesota teams against each other. The winner of this game gets 40 points toward the cup.

Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez is in his 15th season at UW. He has a 107-67-4 career record.

Minnesota coach Glen Mason is 50-43 in eight years at Minnesota. He has a 109-107-1 overall record after serving as a head coach 19 years (Kent State, Kansas).

  • Wisconsin leads the nation in scoring defense, with 8.5 points per game, while it is No. 2 in total defense with 236.4 yards per game. Minnesota has put up an average of 33.3 points per game (tops in the conference) and 463.1 yards per game.

  • Minnesota tailbacks Laurence Maroney and Marion Barber III could make history by becoming the first tandem to each rush for 1,000 yards in two consecutive seasons. Barber has 881 rushing yards while Maroney has 1,030.

  • Senior cornerback Ukee Dozier needs one pass breakup to become the all-time career leader at Minnesota. He is currently tied with Michael Lehan (1999-2002) with 31 pass breakups.

  • Minnesota receiver Jared Ellerson needs just 19 receiving yards to surpass Aaron Hosack's career 1,463 yards to become eighth on the school's career receiving yards list.

  • Wisconsin has won eight games for the ninth time in the past 12 seasons and, with the win, could move to 9-0 for only the third time in school history. The last time the Badgers were 9-0 was 1998.

  • Minnesota has scored fewer than 20 points only twice this season while Wisconsin has not given up more than 17 points.

  • When Anthony Davis is in the game, the Badgers average 25.2 points per game. When he's not, that number drops to 14.3 points per game.
