Wisconsin still targeting Oct. 2 return for Davis
"We'll know a little bit more at the end of the week. He's going to get an exam later this week and next week," Alvarez said.
Davis ran for 78 yards on 13 carries in the Badgers' season opener Sept. 4, before a hard collision late in the second quarter resulted in Davis landing awkwardly out of bounds and injuring his eye. The exact nature of the injury is unknown.
On Sept. 8, Alvarez announced that Davis would miss at least the following three games, meaning that Davis' earliest possible return would be for Wisconsin's Oct. 2 home game against Illinois.
"Ultimately I believe it is going to have to be Anthony's decision," Alvarez said Monday. "That was our initial shooting date. That was our initial goal. So I think we'll have a better idea (after he is re-evaluated)."
During the broadcast of the Wisconsin/Arizona game Saturday, a Fox Sports Net announcer quoted Alvarez as saying that Davis was suffering from a scratched cornea. Alvarez strongly refuted that statement Monday.
"I never uttered the word cornea when I talked to them and that is not accurate," he said. "But I did not even mention that. When someone came back and said something to me—that is not accurate and they did not receive that information from me."
The Fox Sports Net telecast was the not the first time Davis' injury has been considered a scratched cornea. The Sporting News columnist Matt Hayes surmised in the publication's Sept. 13 issue that "the concern is that there could be damage to the cornea…". In addition, a college football weekend preview article in Friday's USA Today stated: "Badgers RB Anthony Davis (scratched cornea) remains sidelined…".
Due to privacy laws, Wisconsin's policy is to release the body part injured and no additional information. Alvarez did not offer any additional information regarding the injury Monday, aside from refuting the notion that it is an injury to Davis' cornea. Davis has not been available to the media since the injury.
