Omole breaks record to help Wisconsin tie for sixth after two days at NCAA Outdoor Championships

The Wisconsin track teams wrote another chapter in the history books Friday with freshman Demi Omole’s performance at day two of the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

As the only freshman to compete in the finals of the 100 meters, Omole finished fifth in the race and recorded a time of 10.15 seconds. This time not only earned him an All-American honor but also broke the previous Wisconsin best of 10.18 set by Michael Bennett in 2000.

With his fifth place finish, Omole tallied four points to give Wisconsin 10 total points and a tie for sixth place after two days.

The Badgers also had two competing in the first day of the decathlon. The first five events were completed on Friday and sophomore Joe Demeter as well as senior Ashraf Fadel are standing at 12th and 14th respectively.

Demeter topped the competition in the 400 meters and recorded a personal best of 47.34 seconds. He also set a personal best of 10.84 seconds in the 100 meters which was good enough for a fifth place tie in the event. Fadel’s time of 50.17 in the 400 meters was also a personal best for him and put him at 12th in the event. Demeter finished day one with 3,904 points while Fadel tallied 3,889 points. Both are hoping to catch up to Rice’s Ryan Harlan whose 4,232 points leads the decathlon.

The Badgers also had two more competing in field events on Friday but unfortunately failed to make it on to the final rounds.

Sophomore Alonzo Moore took a 17th place in the triple jump. He jumped a 51-1 but it was not good enough to move on to Saturday’s final. Sophomore Danielle Ohmen was one of two Wisconsin women to compete at the championships but her season came to a close on Friday when she failed to clear the opening height of 5-7 in the high jump.

Saturday will be the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Wisconsin will have athletes in the finals of the decathlon, men’s 1,500 meters, women’s 1,500 meters and men’s 5,000 meters.
