After the first day of competition, the men’s track team
is currently in first place with 21 points in the Big Ten Outdoor Championships,
held in West Lafayette, Ind.
Friday, Wisconsin’s distance runners gave the Badgers a
competitive edge, as sophomore Simon Bairu won the 10,000 meters in 29:22.16.
Junior Tim Keller finished behind him in 29:24.72 and freshman Tim Nelson
finished in sixth in 29:36.40.
The men’s team also dominated in the first half of the
decathlon, with Wisconsin winning all five of the events. Sophomore Joe Detmer
won the decathlon long jump with a leap of 23-1 ¼ and the 400 meters in 47.84.
Senior Ashraf Fadel won the 100-meter dash in 10.71 seconds and took the shot
put with a throw of 47-7. Fadel is currently in second place overall with 3,953
points. Sophomore Ben Roland and Minnesota junior Travis Brandstetter tied for
first in the decathlon high jump with a best of 6-7 ½.
Wisconsin’s women’s team also saw success and is tied for
third place with 10 points. Senior Leslie Patterson and junior Michelle
Lilienthal finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 10,000 meters.
Sophomore Melissa Talbot is currently leading the pack in
the heptathlon with 3,231 points. She took the heptathlon 100-meter hurdles in
14.04 and the 200 meters in 24.54.
Neither the men’s team nor the women’s team earned points
in the hammer and the women’s pole vault was delayed until Saturday due to the
weather.
