Three tailbacks took bulk of carries in Saturday’s spring game

MADISON, Wis.—Wisconsin’s typically storied running game paled in comparison to the passing game at Saturday’s spring scrimmage. Overall, the running backs were not particularly efficient, with the Cardinal squad posting only 113 yards on 29 carries, unofficially.

Senior tailback Anthony Davis sat out the annual intrasquad scrimmage. In his place, junior Dwayne Smith had eight carries for 27 yards and two catches for 23 yards, while sophomore Booker Stanley had 13 carries for 52 yards and a 12-yard catch. Both players fumbled once on running plays but those miscues were recovered by Cardinal teammates. Junior fullback Matt Bernstein had a solid day, putting up four carries for 18 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown.

“There wasn’t anything easy out there,” head coach Barry Alvarez said. “You think maybe the No. 1s are going to go out there and run the ball all over the place and do things at will. They had to work for everything.”

Sophomore Phillip Fuller was the surprise of the day, serving as the only tailback for the White squad. He had 15 carries for 91 yards, including a 23-yard run and a 25-yard run that led to a field goal. He also contributed a 12-yard catch. He even attempted a pass on a trick play with less than two minutes remaining in the game but it was picked off by sophomore safety Johnny White. Alvarez elected to end the game after the interception.

The White team had 27 carries for 104 yards, but the total is deceiving as it includes three plays in which freshman quarterback Sean Lewis was sacked for a total loss of 28 yards.

On two of those three sacks, however, referees blew the whistle as soon as senior defensive lineman Jonathan Welsh and redshirt freshman defensive lineman Justin Ostrowski, respectively, touched Lewis, just as he was stepping up in the pocket. The sacks of Lewis were the only three in the game as each offensive line did an excellent job protecting the passer.
