MADISON, Wis.—Purdue coach Gene Keady was understandably
upset after his team’s 82-46 loss to Wisconsin Sunday.
Wisconsin’s 36-point win was its largest margin of victory
in the 156-game history of the series. Earlier this season, at Purdue, the
Badgers lost 53-51 when junior guard Devin Harris’ 3-pointer went awry as time
expired.
After Sunday’s game, Keady burst into laughter when asked
how much Wisconsin had improved since he last saw them.
“What did they win by? They improved by whatever points it
was by over two,” Keady said. “Against us, they improved a lot. We let them
improve.”
The loss dropped the Boilermakers to 17-10 overall, 7-7 in
conference play, weakening the team’s chances of reaching the NCAA tournament.
“I don’t have an answer to that. It is up to the
committee,” Keady said regarding Purdue’s chances of earning a berth.
“With this performance, I’m not going to say because I
think we are going to recover and then have a chance to be in it. Right now I’m
so frustrated about all this…I don’t want to fly home, I want to go practice.
Try to teach them how to do stuff right.”
Keady wanted to practice almost as soon as his team took
the floor Sunday.
“If I had had the whistle in this game we would have gone
back in the auxiliary gym and practiced,” he said. “About eight minutes in the
game gone I’d have said, ‘Timeout Teddy (official Ted Hillary). I want to go
upstairs. I’ve got to get something ironed out.”
Kartelo plays in second half
Purdue senior center Ivan Kartelo, normally a starter, sat
out the first half as the result of a suspension stemming from his involvement
in a bar fight. Kartelo entered the game early in the second half and played 10
minutes, contributing three points and one rebound.
“Our plan was to let him lay out the first half,” Keady
said. “It was a situation where if he would have done it in high school I would
have cut him. I don’t let people do that. I think there had to be an example of
him laying out. I think that young people need to know you can’t break rules.
But when you start messing with people’s careers you’ve got to be a little more
cautious about exactly what you do with people. I’m not sure it was the right
penalty or not, but that’s what I did and I’m not sorry for it. I’m not sure how
much effect it had on the game.”
Purdue was also missing starting forward Matt Kiefer, a
sophomore, and little-used sophomore forward Matt Carroll, due to injuries.
