The Badger volleyball team defeated Arizona to advance to
the second round of the NCAA Tournament in College Station, Texas.
Sophomore Kim Glass, Arizona’s key player, had 20 kills but
the Badgers downed the Wildcats 30-24, 25-30, 32-30 and 30-26. Wisconsin (22-10
overall) will next face host Texas A&M, who swept Nicholls State 30-28, 30-24
and 31-29, Saturday at 7 p.m.
Texas A&M boasts Melissa Munsch, who had 17 kills and six
blocks against Nicholls State, as well as Beth Skypala, who had 15 digs Friday.
In the first game, the Badgers dominated,
indicated by their .415 hitting percentage. The Badgers built a 13-7 lead but
Arizona came back to make it a one-point game at 13-12. Wisconsin rebounded with
a six-point lead at 28-22 and won the game on one of sophomore middle blocker
Sheila Shaw’s seven kills for the victory. Shaw led the Badgers with 18 kills
overall.
In the second game, a change in the Arizona lineup proved
to be hazardous for the Badgers, who were up 11-6 before Wildcat setter Kelly
Griffin-Halfaker came off the bench and earned four service aces in the game.
Wisconsin eventually lost the game also due to unforced hitting errors.
After serving for the game point seven times, Shaw had a
service ace that gave the Badgers game three. Game four saw the Badgers lead
24-18 at one point before letting the lead slip to 24-23. Arizona had a service
error and sophomore outside hitter Aubrey Meierotto had one of her 17 kills for
the night to give UW its ticket to the second round.
Junior outside hitter Jill Odenthal had 12 kills while
senior outside hitter Lisa Zukowski had 11, also contributing 18 digs. Senior
defensive specialist/libero Jill Maier had 20 digs.
