Most Indispensable Badger - No.6

Leading up to the season opener Aug.30, BadgerNation will announce its list of the 30 most important players to the Badgers' success in the 2014 season. Although he has an elite talent ahead of him, sophomore Corey Clement will be leaned on to generate big plays for the Wisconsin offense.

Although he was overshadowed last season by Melvin Gordon and James White, sophomore Corey Clement will be a huge offensive spark this season for Wisconsin. Clement impressed onlookers with his quickness and strength from the little we saw of him last season. A combination of Gordon and White, this season will be huge for him as he becomes a legitimate offensive threat for the Badgers and create a potential nightmare duo with Gordon.

Stats: Earned first letter, playing in 12 games ... twice named Big Ten Freshman of the Week (Sept. 9 and Nov. 18) ... ranked third on team with 547 rushing yards on 67 carries (8.2 ypc) ... posted three 100-yard rushing games, including back-to-back 100-yard efforts in first two career games (101 vs. UMass, 149 vs. Tennessee Tech).

Strengths: Clement has impressive strength and his body is deceiving. He is able to plow through guys or run around them, no matter what it takes. He has impressive speed that will help when he is trying to outrun cornerbacks to the end zone.

Weaknesses: Clement is still working on the little things, like pass protection and becoming an every-down back. He also has the improve his hands in the passing game for screen plays, which will be huge this season if the Badgers want to involve their running backs more.

Why he is where he is: If Wisconsin didn’t have a Heisman-caliber tailback on the roster, Clement would be much higher. Even so, Wisconsin needs two healthy tailbacks to operate, meaning Clement will be a huge part of the team’s success this season. If he stays healthy and plays consistent, look for plenty of touchdowns from Clement.

Overall: Clement can be beyond dangerous this season and gives the Badgers one of the scariest back fields in all of college football. He is a tough, hard-nosed player that will be a vital piece of the offensive puzzle for the Badgers. If Clement plays up to his expectations, he will be a 1,000-yard rusher without a doubt. He will learn plenty under Gordon and will thrive this season.

Up Next: He has shown before he can be a playmaker, but number five on our list needs to be an impact player every game for the Badgers considering his age and position.

Note: This is not a list of the team's 30 best players or a series about past success, but rather a list of which players are the most critical to the team’s success in 2014. The list was created based on a player’s overall importance, impact on the field, the player’s position and expectations. True freshmen were not considered for this season.
