MADISON - After a pair of double-digit scoring games, including a 14-point effort in a win over No. 9 Michigan State on Sunday, Nigel Hayes earned his third career Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor, the conference announced Monday.

On Sunday, Hayes went 8-for-12 (.667) from the free throw stripe against Michigan State, finishing 3-for-5 (.600) from the field in 27 minutes. At Illinois last Tuesday, Hayes posted 14 points, four rebounds and two steals in the Badgers' 75-63 win. The freshman has reached double figures in each of UW's last three games, averaging 15.0 points per game during that stretch.

Hayes is averaging 10.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game during Big Ten play, while ranking second in the conference in field goal percentage (.582) during league games.

In earning his third Big Ten Freshman of the Week award, the Toledo, Ohio, native trails only Indiana's Noah Vonleh (7) for most this season.

Hayes, who is fifth on the team in scoring (8.8), has also now been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week more times than any other player in UW history.

Trailing first place by three games with seven to go, Wisconsin (19-5, 6-5 Big Ten) hosts Minnesota (16-8, 5-6) on Thursday before traveling to Michigan (17-6, 9-2) Sunday. Both teams defeated UW in the first meeting this season.
