Monona Grove defeated Madison Edgewood, 27-9, on the road to move to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Badger North. After missing the last two weeks with a knee injury, Jaden Gault returned to the lineup.
We knew that Edgewood would be good. They've always been kind of our big rival. They also play us tough each year. We started off with some easier victories, won by a lot and the starters were out by the first half. It was a big deal to play a full game and the best part of the game for us was the end. We were up 20-9 and we ended up going 96 yards in the fourth quarter and took off over seven minutes on the clock. That was a big statement from the offensive line's standpoint. We only passed once on that drive, and that showed where our offensive line is and what we're trying to do every week.
What did Monona Grove do well as a team?
I thought we really played physically the whole game, especially on defense. We've always been kind of physical, but I think we raised our level of play and were excited to play a team that was going to be really competitive. I thought we established that on defense and on the offensive line.
Where did you improve individually and how did your knee hold up after missing the last two games?
I thought I had my better game of the year. I was obviously real excited to get out there after missing two weeks. It's not easy sitting out and not playing. You can't help your team at all. It was tough, but we have some good leaders without me in there. To be able to come back in a big game like this, I knew I had to play really well. I was just worried about pass blocking with all the cutting I do as a left tackle. I thought I moved really well and handled the pass rush well. We had a two-minute drive and I was able to lock my guy up.
What do you need to do better going into next week's game?
As an offensive line, we need to continue building off last week and keep blocking to the whistle. We need to be able to pass and run the ball, kind of like what I said last week. We need to be two dimensional. Defensively we need to continue to be physical. We need to be able to go out there and be ready to go because we're playing another tough team.
Playing another undefeated team in Fort Atkinson this week, how will they challenge you as an offense?
James Nachtigal is a really good player for them. I feel he's a lot more fluent this year. He's a physical player and he's fast, so our secondary and our linebackers will need to lock him up. He's going to make plays. It's going to happen, but we'll have to do what we can to limit those plays that he makes. Offensively going against those guys, they are really good. They return a lot of their defensive line from last year. They're really good in my opinion and are one of the better defensive lines in our conference. They are really physical and probably one of the most physical teams in our conference. They'll be challenging, so we'll have to be ready to go.
