Swopshire's college career is over

Northwestern senior forward Jared Swopshire underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and will miss the remainder of the season, ending his college career.

It's the sad news nobody wanted to hear: Jared Swopshire's collegiate career is over.

Injured in Northwestern's loss to Iowa, Swopshire underwent arthroscopic surgery on his injured right knee on Tuesday. The former Louisville standout who transferred to Northwestern for his fifth year of eligibility has played his last college game.

"We all feel badly for Jared that he won't be able to play out the remainder of his final collegiate season," Northwestern head Bill Carmody said in a statement. "He has been a terrific addition to the program, both on and off the court."

Swopshire averaged 9.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while starting each of Northwestern's 24 games. He is pursuing a graduate degree in sports administration.

"He was enjoying a very productive year and was playing his most consistent basketball of the season when the injury occurred," Carmody said. "There is every indication that he'll experience a full recovery."

Northwestern is also without senior forward Drew Crawford, who underwent surgery on his injured right shoulder, plus Jershon Cobb (suspension), Chier Ajou (knee), and Sanjay Lumpkin (wrist). It plays No. 13 Ohio State on Thursday in Columbus.

Chris Emma has covered recruiting, college athletics and professional baseball for FOX Sports Next since 2009. Emma covered the Nebraska Cornhuskers for Big Red Report, and currently covers the Northwestern Wildcats. He resides on Chicago's north side.
