Despite being low on scholarships, the University of Wisconsin recognized that Northland Pines (Wis.) athlete Austin Ramesh was too versatile to pass up, extending a full scholarship offer and having the 6-2, 225-pound athlete accept Saturday night.

MADISON - With head coach Bret Bielema and other members of the coaching staff expressing their desire for having him join their program, Northland Pines (Wis.) athlete Austin Ramesh decided there was no place he would rather play college football than the University of Wisconsin.

On a day where Wisconsin hosted a number of its top in-state prospects, Ramesh became the first from the state to commit from the 2013 recruiting class, according to his father, Chad.

"It's always been his dream to go there and when the opportunity was in front of him, he was ready to make his mind up," Chad Ramesh said. "It's what he's wanted."

Ramesh chose Wisconsin over offers from Central Michigan, Illinois State, Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan State, South Dakota State and North Dakota. The offer initially was a grayshirt, but a UW source said the offer was increased to a full offer after the Cyclones, Hawkeyes and Spartans offered within the last week.

"He probably could have waited and done the recruiting deal but it was important to him," said Chad Ramesh. "Once they showed they were all in with him, he knew deep down what he wanted to do. He wasn't sure what was going to happen but once they showed him how much they wanted it, it didn't take him long to think about it."

Earning first-team all-conference honors on both sides of the ball as a junior, Ramesh had over 2,500 yards of total offense and 22 overall touchdowns during his junior season, a season where he played running back, wide receiver, linebacker, special teams and both safety spots.

The UW source said the coaching staff likes Ramesh at either linebacker or fullback and will hopefully determine his future college position when he camps with Wisconsin this summer.

Ramesh’s visit Saturday was his fourth visit to Wisconsin.

“It was really cool having the coaches come up to me and having them know me by my first name,” Ramesh told Badger Nation after his third visit. “It’s cool to get my relationship formed with the new coaches and they were really hands on. It was all about the recruits. They were all about making us feel a part of the team and get accustomed to the way they run things.”
